Christian Outdoor Recreation: Reporting on: Making Camping More Fun for all:

If you have a camping trip coming up in the near future and you are thinking of a way you might be able to make it more enjoyable for you and your friends or family, then you are reading the right article. Many enjoy the great outdoors but some see camping as old hat and boring. When you think of camping you already know about the fishing trips and the hiking that comes with it but if you go to the same place or go fairly often and or do the same things all the time; I can identify with you, try to find another place just to break the routine and do some research on the area, such as are there falls or lakes or other scenic sites in the area? Knowing where you are going and what you will encounter will allow you to have more fun in knowing somewhat as to what you will be experiencing. For example, scenery and or old towns in the area and it would probably be far more interesting if you knew the history behind the mountain you are going to hike up. Along with that is being able to identify any wildlife or birds you may see along the way as well. Oh, don’t forget about the memories that are made in doing things together! Then when the day is just about spent and everyone is in camp, start a fire, as one of fondest memories I treasure is standing around a camp fire hearing people talk. That is a wonderful way to settle down after having a good or mediocre day! For that creates an atmosphere of sharing our views of the day as well as starting a reminiscing of past experiences and of course along with that we are roasting marshmallows for making some mores and for some just wanting a cup of coffee. Lastly, I will leave you with a tip that could make the difference between having a good time or a lousy time. If you are in a very popular area, ask how close your campsites are to others in the area as you sure don’t want to be around people that party half the night. Been there and experienced that! Hey, have a great time!

Christian Outdoor Recreation: Reporting on: Finding out where the Fishing Holes are:

Want to go fishing but don’t know where you want to go? There are thousands of lakes, historic trails, campgrounds, sleuths, creeks and reservoirs to choose from. From Alaska to Florida and New Mexico to Main; there are fishing holes of all kinds waiting for you to find them. If you don’t know the area, you can always ask about places to fish at the local bait and tackle store or check at the local wildlife office as they can provide a map to most all fisheries in the area. They can also tell you what can be caught in each one along with which is private that you may fish in for a price and those that are open to the public. If you are looking too fish in another state, you can find the phone numbers by looking under the name of the state in the white pages of the telephone book. Make sure to find out if you will need a permit before fishing at a city lake or if you are planning on fishing on private property, you will have to have permission to fish. Be an explorer, if you have a car or pickup, gas money and an adventurous spirit, try the back roads of your county to look for public access sites near public roads to streams and rivers. You may also find fishing holes by joining organizations or clubs. Once you find your perfect location, learn what kinds of fish are present and what the rules are. What will you be able to catch and the number and sizes of fish you can keep. Is it just catch and release? Always, be respectful and leave the property clean and free of trash and fishing lines.

Meeting a Need

Christian Outdoor Recreation: Reporting on: Meeting a need

A couple of weeks ago I felt like I needed to go fishing again as our hunting season was coming up very shortly. Most of the other people I normally go fishing with were busy on the day I chose to go, so I invited a fellow I had gotten to know some time back, when had we worked for Louisiana Pacific. He was single and had not worked for a long time and was always looking for a job in welding or whatever he could get as he has not had any money coming in for quite a spell. I have empathy for him for I have been there many times over the years. So I ask him if he would like to go fishing with me and from my past experiences fishing out at Alnoe, I told him, you definitely will catch fish and I will pay for the trip out there. He replied he would very much like to go and ask how much would a fishing license would be. I explained to him that we would be fishing in a private pond so he would not need a license and I would pay for us to fish there. The next morning we took off at close to 5:30 and through the course of our conversation I found out that he had not fished for years and in his earlier years had few opportunities to go. When we arrived at the lake the fish were hitting the surface of the water along the edge and there was a cloud cover; so we never did see the sun for about two and half hours. But, by the time my friend and I had rigged up with Crappie jigs we had decided it was a little too cool to sit in the boat as we had quite a time tying on the hooks. So we fished from the bank for an hour or more and only caught 2 Blue Gill. I was amazed for I had never seen fishing this slow at Alnoe as we were not getting hits at all! The only thing I could think of that was keeping them from biting, was the much cooler weather we were to have in the next few days. Some other people we knew came and put their boat in so we decided to do the same as we were sure not getting any hits from the bank! As we put out into deeper water we got hits with our crappie jigs and flies along with just a little worm on the end, but the way they hit reminded me of the year before in early spring. I and a friend were at a lake where the fish would hit lightly and mouth it all the way into shallower water and let go. We even just let it set but we never caught one fish in the four hours we were at that lake. To say the least this is something I sure didn’t expect at Alnoe! After an hour of just pulling our lines in and throwing it back out; the sun came out and the temperature started rising. It was then, that the fish decided to start taking our lures. No, I can’t say we had excellent fishing after that but we did fair, considering the amount of time we were catching fish and left Alnoe went with about 45 Crappie. The most important thing about the day though was giving the friend I had taken with me a day he could remember and just allow him to get his mind off of his worries for a while! So I praise GOD for giving me leading to take him out with me! We all need people to rally around us at times just to give us the feeling that people do care!

here are some real good places to fish on the north east coast. The entire coastline from Connecticut down through Maine. There are many choices of different fishing spots. Much of the saltwater fishing in both New York and Connecticut center in Long Island. There are over 120 species of fine fish and 21 tropical species that stray to the north east coast seasonally. Listed are a few of the featured species. They include Black Sea Bass, Bluefish, False Albacore, Summer Flounder, Striped Bass, Tautog, Weakfish and Winter flounder. The North east coast offers some of the best cod fishing for the winter months. In addition the quality fishery, lake sizes and the maze of islands that offer some of the best scenic shorelines to add to the attraction. So, where do you begin? It is a tough choice to make. First, start by consulting with the local guides and resources before heading out to fish. You can also search the internet for reviews of sites you would like to visit. Things to look for are the time of season, how many fish were caught and how the overall experience was. This will help you to decide the best place for you.

Fishing Fun Tidbits:

Christian Outdoor Recreation: Reporting on: Fishing Fun Tidbits:

There are ways to make fishing fun and enjoyable for the whole family. You don’t always need all that fancy, expensive fishing gear from the store. Try making your own fishing pole. Over time I have run on to two or more people that had taken their grandchildren out fishing for Bluegill, Perch and Catfish. Upon reaching their fishing place, they had each one choose their fishing pole out of the willows they found along the shore line. Then they gave them a small shovel to dig for worms and if they could not find very many or found none, they were given small seining nets to catch grass hoppers. The grandparents said it really depended on the children age as to how much they enjoyed getting the worms and or Grasshoppers, but once they started catching fish; even the time they spent catching their bait became a time of having fun and gave them something to remember. You don’t have to go out and spend a lot of money to have good time fishing. A basic education of fishing should be learned in a “learner friendly” environment. Try to teach your children to practice casting a line in your back yard using a jig with the hook removed as it will give you a more realistic weight and feel. Water is not the place to teach but to learn how to catch fish. After the motions are grasped, focus on accuracy. Make sure you also practice with reel troubles such as tangles and malfunctions. You should also educate yourself on the proper fish species and what types of fish you can expect to catch. You can plan a trip to your local wildlife office or you can use an internet source which can offer you an abundance of information. Be sure to implement good safety habits during your practice and during your fishing outing as you could hook yourself or someone else. One more thing, as children get older teach them how to set their drag as it can sure make the difference as to whether they catch a fish and or snap their line. Being prepared in knowing what you are doing will make your outing more enjoyable and relaxing and always remember to bring along your glasses, hat, bugspray and sunscreen.

#2 Finally, a break in the Weather to go Fishing

Christian Outdoor Recreation: Reporting on: # 2 Finally, a break in the Weather to go Fishing

The following day we left home about 6:15 and arrived at the reservoir close to 8:00. We each paid our 10 dollars and put in our boats and put the little electric trolling motor on mine along with a battery he gave me and it worked superbly well, having 5 speeds on it! What my friend placed in the water was a small pontoon boat about 8ft. long with him sitting on the seat and propelling himself around with swim fins. Before we left the bank he showed me his fishing license which showed he could use two poles if he wished too as he paid an additional amount for it. That was the first time I had heard of that! After that he gave me a small communication device where in we could talk to one another to see how the other was doing fish wise. He had two pole holders on his pontoon boat, one for a fly rod and one for a casting rod. As soon as he reached deeper water, he had a fish on both rods. I could not believe that as he had a rod in each hand. By that time I had reached deeper water and put down anchor and was using my old reliable, a white curly tail about 1¼” long with just a bit of worm on it and a bobber set about 6’ above it. I kept on pulling it in just a little at a time but I was not having the same results my friend was as he was trolling with his fins all the time and using a large green fly of a sort. It was some time before my sidekick called and ask me how I was doing and I told him I had one and lost one. Well by this time he had 6 fish and had two of his flies snapped off probably by bass! He told me to try to keep it moving all the time and suggested that I troll with the motor on the first speed. Well I thought I might try to just jig it up and down on the bottom first before I tried trolling. I did that and caught one every once in a while but still nothing like what my partner was doing. After a time I laid down my casting outfit and tried my fly rod with a large green fly on it and picked up a couple more. My friend then called and said why don’t go we eat lunch! As I started heading back to the pickup with the motor speed on one, I picked up several bluegills but by the time I had the motor turned off most of them got off because I would get excited and would turn the speed control to 5, ha. I told my friend about it and he just laughed and said you will get used to it. He then told me I had at least 4 hours of trolling time in the battery and not to worry about it. I still did not troll though because of the amount of fish I lost in shutting the motor off and went back to pulling the jig up and down on the bottom as I had a lot more control then. After lunch I still stayed with a green hula skirt with just a bit of worm and caught several more and then I changed to a purple skirt and my friend asked me if I was ready to go home, by that time I had caught 2 more and on the way going back to the pickup I had on five or six more on but only got 2 of them in. It was then that I realized that color can play a large part as to whether they hit or not as well as keeping the bait moving. By the time we stopped fishing we had 45 to 50 Bluegills from 7 ½ to 9 ½” long. Both of us had a lot of fun and a lot of laughs and that’s what we went out there for!

Christian Outdoor Recreation: Reporting on: # 1 Finally, a break in the Weather to go Fishing

Yesterday I and a friend went back to private pond that is near Drewsey Oregon. We had not fished it for about 2 months. It has been so hot here the last month and a half that we felt it would be of little worth to us to try to fish out there especially in a boat. We kept watching for a weather change but that did not happen till day before yesterday, when it got down to 71 for the high. That was a drastic change from the high 80’s and 90’s and past. Neither of us was able to go that day so we decided to go the following day with the temperature being 73 for the high. One reason I was looking forward to going fishing out there was, that my friend had just gotten a new Electric Trolling motor and said he would give me his older one, which was just taking up space in his garage and had been used only just a few times and is small enough to fit on my 10 ft. skiff just fine. All that was required was to pay for the gas to go fishing out at Altnow and fill up his gas tank when we returned home. I was more than willing to do that as I did not like to oar especially against the wind as there are a number of reservoirs around here that will not allow a motor boat on them.

Christian Outdoor Recreation: Reporting on: Water Recreation:

Have you ever felt the need to explore and get that sudden adrenaline rush of excitement? Ever wonder about the ways to achieve this adrenaline rush? Try water recreation as your next big trip. Water exploration is achieved through tubing, river rafting, boating, fishing, swimming, and not just lakes and oceans but water parks as well. Most areas have a big water park that you pay to get into; consisting of large tubular slides and also a wave pool. A water park is very popular during the summer time, especially while the children are on vacation. Most people often look into exploring something more adventurous so they choose something like the Grand Canyon Rafting expedition, or rafting the Colorado River. Although these adventures are guided, you will still find time to have fun and let loose, while still following safety rules of course. Always remember to wear all the protective gear that you definitely need. Fishing is a fun sport to do to relax or to enjoy the sport of catching a good sized fish to take home and brag about later. There are many competitions that one may sign up for that involve fishing as well. Some may even be big prizes. The majority of these activities can involve children or adults, this makes for good family bonding time and vacations. Water recreation is on most top lists of what people want to do the most, even for those who have a fear of water related activities or for those who cannot swim. If you are the person who cannot swim, remember, wear all your protective gear and listen to all the rules.

The Rattlers seen at the Men’s Retreat

Christian Outdoor Recreation: Reporting on: The Rattlers seen at the Men’s Retreat

On Friday evening a friend of mine and I were going through the coral gate with me being a little behind him. As he lifted the gate off of the rock, he dropped it, for two ft. away he heard a Rattler and saw it go into a ground squirrel hole. I had not even heard it buzz but it was not surprising to me as I was up a few years on my friend. I then went over and you could see the Rattler and his tail vibrating right alongside his head and got to hear it at that time! Within a few mins we had a number of people around us and one person having a 38 having snake load shells. Once it was shot, the head was cut off and the diamond back was said to be past 40” in length. The snake was then placed on ice which would be smoked at later date for a big buck and burger bash in Nov. If that was not enough excitement; on Saturday evening just before dark at the same gate someone else saw one go under the rock that held the gate up. In a matter of mins a crowd formed; with the man with the 38 coming over and shooting that one also after the rock was turned over rather quickly, not knowing what to expect! That snake was 38”long. So far, about the only thing we have not tasted at one those burger bashes, is smoked skunk! Ha. From the time we arrived on Friday afternoon we were reminded to look for Rattlers if you are walking through brush. On one of the old grainry walls is a snake skin 63” long and 9 to 10”wide. After everyone got back to camp from our Saturday afternoon fishing trip; our pastor was telling us about what happened to him. The pastor said if you are walking through brush or willows as thick as some of this is trying to look for Rattlers you will not be aware of any animals that may be around and can even lose your sense of direction in the high thick willows that you may be crawling through it to find your way out. He said he learned that first hand when he walked right over two Rattlers and the fellow behind him ask him if he had seen them and he said no! Then while he was fishing one went right between his legs and turned around and rattled. Upon hearing that, the rest of us were all thankful that we had not any of those types of occurrences, that we were aware of! It kind of makes you wonder though, if it is safe to fish out there!

Routine for the Men’s Retreat

Christian Outdoor Recreation: Reporting on: Routine for the Men’s Retreat

Normally before breakfast some people will take a hike up the road with camera’s to find wildlife and are rarely disappointed as they may see bear, elk, deer and an occasional bobcat. After breakfast people did a number of things like trout fishing, horseshoes, shooting traps and rifles along with other games. Last year one person who was quite knowledgeable about fly fishing held a class on how to use a fly rod. He had enough students that he could only spend a little time with each of us. I was the only one there with a steelhead fly rod and I never did catch on to what he meant by loading before pulling the line forward. This year though I was determined to learn how to use that fly rod, so I did not even bring a regular fishing pole like I did the years before. This gave me the determination to fish with it in spite of my lack of not knowing how to throw the line out right. I was right behind a friend that had caught 3 out of a fairly nice hole and never got another hit so he moved on. I stayed at that hole for probably 15mins and started keeping the line a little more taunt and got to the place where I knew was getting hits and in the next few minutes caught 3 fish with one being 9”and gave it to a little boy that was 7 yrs old. The next hole was larger and I caught a couple of little ones and threw them back. But on the next throw I hooked one 15 to16” and after about 30 to 40 seconds I pulled it to the top where I could see it real good and the hook came loose. When we got back to camp for lunch, I was able to say I had caught some fish with my fly rod and I would have to say that was a big hurtle for me but I knew I had to learn to throw my line out right! Saturday afternoon split the whole group for half of them wanted to stay and shoot guns or play games in the shade, while the others wanted to go down the canyon to where the 3 creeks in that area enter the river and fish but we found in some places that the road that used to go down through there was extremely rough and impassable in some places where water had washed it out and brush had grown up in it. So after about 4 miles we got out and walked, hoping to find some rapids because the river was fairly flat in that area without the water moving much at all with willows growing everywhere. After walking some distance; most of us started fishing in the calm water while two others continuing to walk about a quarter of a mile until they found some rapids with a nice hole down below. About an hour later, they came walking back with a couple of 16”trout and others 9 to12” long. As for the ones that fished in the calmer water, most of us caught an occasional squaw fish, small bass or trout. That evening after supper, a very special devotional was presented by our guest speaker, who was and is a leader of a number treks that takes groups to the summit of some of the highest peaks in the cascade mountain range. After half of the devotional was given, several people including the pastor left for home needing to be in church the following morning. The next day was to be our departure date from the area. After breakfast the following morning, we heard the climax of the devotional that was presented the night before. After that, a number of fellows wanted to fish one more time till lunch! I then ask a friend who knew how to use a fly rod very well to show me what I was doing wrong with my throwing technique. What I received from his instruction will benefit me immensely in the days to come! After lunch we took down our tents and repacked everything in the trailers and pickups and took off for home. That men’s retreat was the best we ever had including one of the finest devotionals I have ever heard.
