Christian Outdoor Recreation: Reporting on: Going Fishing
A few days ago, a friend called and asks me to go fishing with him out at Beulah Reservoir which is about 12 miles north of Juntura Oregon. The road going up to the lake area is fairly secluded probably, mainly because of its wash board effect it has on vehicles even at low speed. The area is known for its fishing as there are some very large trout caught out of the lake at times but as the weather gets heated up its best to fish deep. The canyon going up to the lake offers a fairly nice camping area about 5 miles from the dam and is located in the bottom of a narrow area so it is fairly cool even in warm weather. There are many fishing streams along with Chukar, Deer and Elk hunting possibilities that comes from taking that road as it takes you into the castle rock territory upon reaching the far end of the lake. The view you see from the dam is very spectacular and beautiful; as you will see many rolling hills along with sage brush and Junipers all around the lake. It is several miles long and from there goes into a very remote and high elevation with one mountain having a huge rock out cropping rising above it called castle rock. This whole area is very well known for its hunting. My friend had been in the area several times over the years and said there are few decent roads into the area but in the higher elevations some roads are fairly steep and are more or less cow trails but several of them will take you right out on to a nice graveled road. But each road may lead to a different area such as Drewsey, Unity, Ironside and Praire city; so if you going into that area do yourself a favor; take along a map or you may get lost! Now back to what I was first talking about, fishing Beulah reservoir. It was very warm by the time we arrived at the lake as we did not start out when we should have, mainly because of a communication error of the person driving, ha. We did not get there till about till about 9:30 and I had forgotten my wadding shoes to shove the boat off of the trailer. I didn’t want too but I wadded out with my good tennis shoes on, so my feet were wet all day long but the water felt real nice. It was a good thing we were just out for a good time otherwise we would have been disappointed for we never got a hit one on anything we tried in both shallow and or deep water and no, we did not have a downrigger! We spent about 5hrs. on the lake with the sun getting warmer all the time and decided to fish where the river came out of the reservoir which was extremely turbulent. My friend found a hole several times that his bait sank into and picked up 3 trout out of it with 2 of them being 16”and the other one 12”. As for me, I fished in the very swift water up above and only got two hits and never connected with either one. But it was a great day as we just enjoyed conversing with one another throughout most of the day and that’s what we were mainly out there for as neither of us eats trout!

Christian Outdoor Recreation: Reporting on: # 4 Time with our Great Grandson
The evening my daughter and her husband returned from Reno after being at their Daughter’s wedding. We all decided we would go to the coast the next day! Upon entering Lincoln city we spent several hours walking the beach along with wading in the surf looking for title pools where we could see sea life and just generally looking for shells and other oddities that wash up on the sand. Upon leaving there we stopped at a noted Whale watching location that had to be 600 ft or more above the Ocean located between Lincoln city and depot bay. Most of the time we were Whale watching the wind was blowing in gusts but we had a number of sightings in the hour and half we were there. One time we got to see most of a complete whale on top of the water! All of us really enjoyed the time there except our Great Grandson, which wanted us to move on right after we got there. We had been there for quite some time before I noticed a fellow fishing from the rocks some distance down to the right of us. I would have liked to talk with him but I knew that my wife would frown on me doing that with everyone there. After we left there we went to Depot Bay and went through the Whale sighting station, which had quit a history of whale sighting along with seal, walrus and sea otter. We then went across the highway to the many beach front stores that are in Depot Bay. They all had the same theme in mind but each shop had their own individual taste in products which were different from another, so it was not boring going through them as I suspected they might be! Of course my Great Grandson was always looking around for something his grandmother would buy for him as she had proven herself to be a real soft touch every since he was born!

Christian Outdoor Recreation: Reporting on: #2 Time with our Great Grandson
Now, we felt we needed to get our Great Grandson out of his environment and find places which out of the ordinary; so my daughter looked on the internet and found a number of reservoirs in the area that we might fish and got directions to each of them. The next morning we took off with a lunch and soft drinks and found that all of the reservoirs had a lot of moss in them so we went to the river and found a cleared beach. We fished for a while without catching anything and I saw my great grandson struggling in just trying to cast out a ways. I made a decision to try to teach him how to cast as we had plenty of room on the beach to do that! The first thing I told him was not to reel in extremely fast as he lifts his bait or lure out of the water. For it causing the line to wrap around the fishing pole and guess who ended up untangling it or cutting it as well as tying on another hook. I then ask him to cast out several times so I could watch him, so I could show him how to get his line out much farther than he is now throwing! As I watched him throw, I noticed that he was pulling the rod up about the time the lure would hit the water. So I brought that to his attention and showed him several times but it seemed like for the next half hour he kept right on pulling his rod up just by impulse and looking at me as I smiled and kept on telling him, I know you can do it, just don’t give up; you will get the hang of it, all it takes is practice. I also reminded him that everything we learn in life like learning the internet and how to really get good at playing games or working at a job comes from practice; so never give up! After that half hour he took a break and just set on the beach for some time. During this time I spent my time praying that he would keep on trying along with unraveling line on his pole and got to do a little more fishing until my grandson came over and said he wanted to try it again. Then after the first few casts he just got better all the time till he could cast almost as far as I could. I told him I was proud of him for just picking up and trying again until he succeeded in what he set out to do! No, he did not catch a fish but he learned a valuable lesson!

Christian Outdoor Recreation: Reporting on: Finding the right fishing hole
Have you ever gone out fishing and come back home empty handed? Do you know someone that seems to always be lucky and brings home more than their share of fish each time they go out. Truth be told they are probably a better angler than you are. Fish are more often smarter than we think. To be a successful angler you should focus on one or two fishing holes and fish them regularly to learn them. Try avoiding the crowded fishing spots and instead try choosing out of the way locations. These out of the way locations will offer you peace and quiet. When a fishing hole is crowded, noisy or has been fished for a long period of time fish become wary and are less likely to bite. If you decide to move from a fishing hole because the water is shallow, you may want to reconsider. Try fishing near the weed beds or underwater structures, many times fish will hide where the water temperature is cooler. Who knows, you may be surprised by the shallow trolling. Don’t for get to try the main lake points where fish may gather during their passing in or out. Also, it never hurts to share a few tips or get a few tips from your fellow fishermen. Happy fishing and remember fishing is meant to be fun.

Christian Outdoor Recreation: Reporting on: Breaking away from the norm
I don’t know about you, but I thank God for the warm weather we have had for the past 2 1/2weeks! Before then it rained most every day with the temperature still in the high 30’s and low 40’s. Most of the streams and river reservoirs were at flood stage for quite some time! Because of that, there was a lot of sand bagging going on trying to keep the river in check from over running its bank on a large scale. A few weeks before that our newspaper had an article and a picture showing the water flowing over the top of the Warm Spring reservoir dam in south eastern Oregon. Of course, it has receded some now from the reports I have gathered from a number of friends who had fished there! Listening to Their stories though gave me the desire to go fishing somewhere, but there was so much water in most of the reservoirs and rivers in our part of the state that I decided to go to a private pond which would not break my gas budget to get there! The ponds name is Altnow and is located near Drewsey Oregon. In order to fish there you have to make a reservation and the second is, it cost $10.00 a pole. It is fed by warm and cold water springs so consequently produces some fairly good sized bluegill and bass. The size of the pond is about a ¼ of a mile across any way you look at it. It has excellent bedding grounds for both species with cattails around half of its perimeter. Most shore line’s start out at about 2 ft deep and others drop off in a hurry! The deepest spot I found with my anchor is about 23ft. But I have no doubt there are deeper places in there! Most people just fish from the bank and get a fair number of them along the dam with mainly bluegill being caught. Really it depends on the day if there is lot of overcast you may go home with a hundred or more. But if it is extremely warm and clear like the day I just went out, you would do best to have a boat or float tube and use flies or a small jig head with worm or just worm on a hook. Then place a small spinner about 16” above the hook and attaché a bobber 6 ft to 8 ft above the bait. If you can’t catch fish on a lure, give bait and a small spinner a try! A little flash at times can sure draw them to your bait in a hurry! Sometimes, we just have to break away from our norm if we want to take some fish home!

Christian Outdoor Recreation: Reporting on: Be Prepared for fishing fun:
Fishing is one of America’s favorite past times. Fishing can be a great activity and can also be exciting and tranquil all at the same time. So, before you go out make sure you’re packed all the things you will need to make your outing as joyful as possible. First make sure you have a fishing license! If you are fishing with children check to make sure your state does not require them to have a license (some states do). You don’t want to be stuck being ticketed with a large fine. Pack yourself a couple of sandwiches, snacks and some drinks in a cooler. You will also need some small trash bags, sunscreen, bug repellent and hand wipes/napkins. Oh, don’t forget your hat and sunglasses. If you are fishing in the spring you don’t want to go early in the morning because the water is cold and the sun is low. You want to wait until the water warms up a bit. Don’t let that detour you because winter is over and the fish are hungry and spawning. Keep in mind that fish have excellent vision and can hear and detect vibrations. Fish can also smell and taste food. To catch a fish one needs to know where the fish lives and what they like to eat. You can go to your local bait shop to find where your local hotspots are and for some inside information on where the fish will bite. Happy Fishing!!

Christian Outdoor Recreation: Reporting on: Shots of the Past # 1
About three months back I went to Idaho to see my mother. She had just gotten back from visiting most of my other brothers and sisters and their family’s scattered around in four states: Idaho, Oregon, California and Washington. She had a wonderful time with each of them but was looking forward to going back to New Mexico where she lives with my Brother’s family and of course loves the warmer weather down there. The day before I left Caldwell Idaho to go back home to Oregon, she ask if I would take her to Wilder Idaho to see my aunt and uncle that are 93 years old as well as 2 cousins that still lives there. As we drove there, we reminisced on a number of things and had a lot of laughs. As we started conversing with my aunt and uncle, He started talking about some things from way back. They first came to Wilder Idaho back in 1936 from the panhandle in the Oklahoma Ozarks. In Oklahma my Grandfather and Grandmother had 5 kids. They worked at anything that came along and fished a lot, along with shooting anything they thought they could eat. They had chickens, cows and raised anything that would grow in the soil including fruit trees. The one thing that surprised me most was hearing that My Grandfather had been a Circuit Rider Preacher.

Christian Outdoor Recreation: Reporting on: # 2 Vacations in the Past:
Goose Creek was around 10 to 30ft wide and held some fairly good size trout so it was sure a lure for me. I was ten now and was using flies as I had a ready supply of them for we had a Evens lure and fly assemble plant in our town and my brother and I as well as others would go through their dumpsters and sometimes find some fairly nice things to use fishing. I used only flies in mountain streams having fast clear water and always tried to place my fly at the front of extremely fast water you could not see into. My favorite fly was a Silver Doctor and No I never learned to use a fly rod. The largest fish I caught at Goose Creek was around 18 inches. One day though my dad went to the store to pick up some ice in New Meadows and was told someone had caught a 30”trout out of some hole there. Looking back I can’t remember a time where we did not have enough fish for supper and what was amazing was whether we were fishing or fooling around doing something we always knew when it was close to lunch time. After lunch my older sister took care of the younger kids and the rest of our family looked for wild Blueberries along the side hills in the shade of the trees. It got very warm during the day and you sought out shade any way and that’s for sure there no shortage of BlueBerries for they were everywhere. After supper I remember we always took a trail that led along the top of a hill to see wildlife; that is if someone was not acting up! Then when we got back to camp we would have some Blueberries with sugar and Cream on them which had a super taste. At the end of the week when we left to go home we took around 6 gals of Blueberries back with us.

Christian Outdoor Recreation: Reporting on: # 1 Vacations in the Past:
It has been quite some years since I had thought about our vacations in the past. Most of our Vacations were spent at Goose Creek located between New Meadows and McCall Idaho. Now the roads back when were not all that great and it was several years after the War before most every gas station had brand new tires to sell. Even getting retreads was hard to find at times, if you could afford them. So before ever starting out on any long trip, just like usual our Dad would say, I don’t want any one mentioning a flat tire, do you understand me? (He meant it!) This was only because it took an hour or better taking the tire off and patching it and putting it back on. We finally arrived at Goose Creek after a grueling 5 to 6 hr drive as my dad did not drive all that fast. All I could think about after getting out of that hot car and doing some exploring and fishing. Of course that’s not what my Dad had in mind. The first thing the three oldest of us had to do was help unpack, help put the tent up and find wood. So we did not do a whole lot that first day. We only saw about 5 people the entire week we were there. I was probably 10 at the time with me being the oldest of 6 Children. The first remembrance I had every morning walking back to camp after fishing or bathing in the hot springs up on the side of the hill was catching the aroma of Coffee and Bacon floating down the canyon; that smell was tantalizing. After breakfast we older kids did the dishes. Then we parted company with I and my brother going up the hill to explore and try to find caves and large over hangs to sit on and just look out over the mountains. Along the way we filled our pockets with wild Blueberries’ (with some being the size of an adult thumb nail.) That’s for sure anything captured our attention at that time. We would lay down under gigantic trees looking up at the sky and seeing squirrels or large birds at times. Then when we got bored we pulled out our pocket knives to whittle a while. As far as seeing much Wildlife most of the time we made so much noise talking, yelling and throwing things laying around that we rarely saw anything outside of Chipmunks.

Christian Outdoor Recreation: Reporting on: # 2 Fishing at Willow Reservoir:
Within an hour,
we decided we would leave Willow Reservoir and head for home. The road heading towards Emigrant Creek was very inviting compared to what we had just driven over to get to the Reservoir! As we were approaching the Creek we knew it was at high stage or close to it but there was no way of telling how deep it was. The rig I was driving was a 1967 ¾ ton GMC Pickup which is fairly heavy. Across the Creek from us were about 7- ¾ ton Pickups with a number of people fishing from the bank looking on as I was contemplating as whether I should try going across of not. we prayed about crossing it. Then I told my Wife to close the windows and place her feet on the seat as I figured we would have water coming in through the door seals. I knew I had to keep the engine running, so I put it in Granny gear and started in slowly and then floor boarded it as the back tires touched the water. The traction held till I hit the center of the Creek then it slipped about 6” or so, at that time the water was over the top of the hood but I kept it floor boarded and climbed out of the Creek on the other side without the engine missing a beat. I remembered at that time we had another passenger riding with us, our GOD! Here is a Tip! Don’t try this unless you know you can make it and GOD is right there with you or you may be seeing your Creator Earlier than what you would have liked ! In RetrospectLooking back being a little older now, I ask myself would I have done the same thing again at high water level. Absolutely not, it’s better to bite the bullet then to take the chance and possibly end up losing your life and that of your Wife.
