Christian Outdoor Recreation: Reporting on: # 4 Time with our Great Grandson

The evening my daughter and her husband returned from Reno after being at their Daughter’s wedding. We all decided we would go to the coast the next day! Upon entering Lincoln city we spent several hours walking the beach along with wading in the surf looking for title pools where we could see sea life and just generally looking for shells and other oddities that wash up on the sand. Upon leaving there we stopped at a noted Whale watching location that had to be 600 ft or more above the Ocean located between Lincoln city and depot bay. Most of the time we were Whale watching the wind was blowing in gusts but we had a number of sightings in the hour and half we were there. One time we got to see most of a complete whale on top of the water! All of us really enjoyed the time there except our Great Grandson, which wanted us to move on right after we got there. We had been there for quite some time before I noticed a fellow fishing from the rocks some distance down to the right of us. I would have liked to talk with him but I knew that my wife would frown on me doing that with everyone there. After we left there we went to Depot Bay and went through the Whale sighting station, which had quit a history of whale sighting along with seal, walrus and sea otter. We then went across the highway to the many beach front stores that are in Depot Bay. They all had the same theme in mind but each shop had their own individual taste in products which were different from another, so it was not boring going through them as I suspected they might be! Of course my Great Grandson was always looking around for something his grandmother would buy for him as she had proven herself to be a real soft touch every since he was born!

Christian Outdoor Recreation: Reporting on: #3 Time with our Great Grandson

The next day we decided to take our Great Grandson to the Carnival as he had money of his own to burn. Once there, all he wanted to ride was the hammer head and after that one ride and hitting a counter weight with a large hammer several times trying to hit a bell at the top of the machine, he figured he would save the rest of his money to buy a game. That same evening we decided to go to the Portland Zoo the following morning which according to my Great Grandsons sleep habit is 10:30 or later. By the time he was ready to go, we had packed up some goodies as well as water and plugged in the GPS and arrived at the Zoo about 11:30. But did not get parked till about 11:55; the reason for that was the traffic coming in was unreal even for the size of the huge parking lot they had. So people keep driving around behind a line of cars until it was their turn to move into a space where a car is just backing out. About the time we entered the zoo I turned on my camera and found out that the battery was down so I had to walk the quarter of a mile back to the car to get a fresh battery and reset the date before I could take a picture. The Lord gave me a good attitude though, but I can’t tell you what the attitude my wife and Great Grandson had by the time I got back to where they were sitting. But we all took it in stride, as we stopped at each exhibit. I took several pictures of each animal at times because there were several portals to look though. By the time we were about ¾ of the way through my Great Grandson was trying to hurry me up but he never did tell me so. Instead, he ask me how many pictures are you going to take of this one? I just smiled and said I think we have just 3 or 4 more animals to see then we will leave! About the time we were getting ready to leave my Great Grandson said he was hungry, so we ask him where he would like to eat once we get on the road, he replied the Burger King. We knew if we did not ask that question we would be eating something at the park. By the time we reached home my Great Grandson went right to the computer and started playing games so it was hard to tell whether He enjoyed the zoo or not.

Now, we felt we needed to get our Great Grandson out of his environment and find places which out of the ordinary; so my daughter looked on the internet and found a number of reservoirs in the area that we might fish and got directions to each of them. The next morning we took off with a lunch and soft drinks and found that all of the reservoirs had a lot of moss in them so we went to the river and found a cleared beach. We fished for a while without catching anything and I saw my great grandson struggling in just trying to cast out a ways. I made a decision to try to teach him how to cast as we had plenty of room on the beach to do that! The first thing I told him was not to reel in extremely fast as he lifts his bait or lure out of the water. For it causing the line to wrap around the fishing pole and guess who ended up untangling it or cutting it as well as tying on another hook. I then ask him to cast out several times so I could watch him, so I could show him how to get his line out much farther than he is now throwing! As I watched him throw, I noticed that he was pulling the rod up about the time the lure would hit the water. So I brought that to his attention and showed him several times but it seemed like for the next half hour he kept right on pulling his rod up just by impulse and looking at me as I smiled and kept on telling him, I know you can do it, just don’t give up; you will get the hang of it, all it takes is practice. I also reminded him that everything we learn in life like learning the internet and how to really get good at playing games or working at a job comes from practice; so never give up! After that half hour he took a break and just set on the beach for some time. During this time I spent my time praying that he would keep on trying along with unraveling line on his pole and got to do a little more fishing until my grandson came over and said he wanted to try it again. Then after the first few casts he just got better all the time till he could cast almost as far as I could. I told him I was proud of him for just picking up and trying again until he succeeded in what he set out to do! No, he did not catch a fish but he learned a valuable lesson!

Christian Outdoor Recreation: Reporting on: # 1 Time with our Great Grandson

One day our daughter called us at our home in Burns Oregon, asking us to come to Amity Oregon which is about 30+ miles from Portland Oregon. She said she wanted us to take care of our great grandson that had been staying with them during the summer months. The reason being, my granddaughter was going to Reno Nevada with her husband to be; to get married at the very same place my daughter and her husband as well the young man’s parents were married at! The parents were the only ones they invited to go with them! So, we jumped at the chance to be around our great grandson as we have only been with him only just a handful of times in the 11 years we have known him. So when we were asked to come and take care of him till they returned from Reno,we were thrilled but at the same time uneasy, as we did not know just what we could do to keep him occupied. For we did not know the area and neither did my daughter and her husband for they had just recently moved there. So we did not know the resources in that area that we could utilize, to enable him not only to have a good time but also produce an environment to where each of us could be drawn closer together, through the things we would be doing in the next few days. About the only thing we knew about our grandson was that he was more of a computer and game geek than any else; so upon arriving, we had to adjust some for he wanted us to get involved in playing games with him, so we did! We were not much good at most anything he wanted us to try though as he kept us moving from one game to another!

Have you checked your your Equipment lately?

Christian Outdoor Recreation: Reporting on: Have you checked out your equipment lately?

How many times have you or someone you have known, have taken out their boat and motor and found it not operating properly either in getting it started from the boat ramp or getting it up on plane or the worst scenario; having it stall some miles down the lake and having to call someone to have it towed back to the boat dock? Sooner or later the odds are very great that something will happen and the only way to maybe prevent most of it from happening is preventive maintenance. If you are mechanical minded enough you may be able to check out most things yourself if they are fairly small or you are set up to handle the larger motors. With both though, you must have some knowledge of the working of an outboard and or an inboard motor. Just recently, a friend and his wife were out at Warm springs Reservoir with their flat bottom boat which had a 9 horse motor on it. They were several miles down the reservoir when their motor just up and quit. Now my friend was familiar with the working of the motor and started looking around and eventually found that part of the throttle linkage was missing and assumed that the linkage was in the bottom of the housing, with no way of retrieving it. They had seen no one on the lake they could possibly get help from so he started praying that the Lord would enable him to get the motor started so they could get the boat back to the ramp. He then decided to hold the part of the throttle that was still there in hopes that it would start and it did! He then ask his wife to move to the front of the boat to help hold the front down, as he knew the front would raise with him holding the throttle on the motor wide open. I talked to him and his wife later and he said the first thing they did upon getting the boat to the dock was praise the Lord. Both of them said that was the smoothest ride they ever experienced in that boat in spite of how high the waves were!

Did your Children Mimic you?

Christian Outdoor Recreation: Reporting on: Did your Children Mimic You?

Have you noticed how at a certain age your children start to mimic many of the things they have seen you do! It’s like they have a build in tape recorder; and when they see you dressing or just putting a hat on; you may see them trying to put something on their head to try to duplicate what they saw you do! If they see their Dad with their hat on backwards or sideways they definitely will try it some time. It’s the same way in seeing you in front of the mirror brushing your teeth; in time they will be willing to try it themselves. It’s amazing how they want to be able to do anything and everything they see you or their siblings do! Of course that carries over right into every age group’s thinking as to how great it would be to be able to go there and do that or wear expensive clothes like those we admire. Along with that let’s not forget the cars and homes that make for a beautiful life style! The same applies to our children’s listening abilities; if the parents or others around them are not careful with their choice of words, the recorder in a child will pick them up and duplicate them at a very young age; to the dismay of the parents and others around them. Point in fact, I and others have heard parents laugh at some of the coarse words that came from their young children, not even thinking about the problems they may have to deal with later on in not correcting them as soon as reasonably possible. Along with all that mentioned above, there are those lousy traits that we can pick up throughout life; such as lying, stealing, cheating and the list goes on. In most cases our children will pick these things up and run with them just like we, their parents have done unless we find the alternative path that can offer children as well as any adult a completely different way of looking at life.
In the same way children can pick up good traits such as praying to God, whom they know loves them, which in turn allows them to start learning how to give, rather than constantly feeling it’s all about me! For the adults, it’s realizing over time that seemingly, I can’t do one thing of myself and have it turn out completely in the way it needs to be done, without it affecting my relationship with my wife, children, friends or others around me in some adverse way! Our only solution to this and all other problems that crop up in our lives is looking to the One who gave us life for the answers we so desperately need! This causes us to ask, what separates us from God? 1. Scripture, says that sin separates us from Him! 2. Describes Jesus as the one that is needed to straighten out the wreck in our lives! 3. Makes reference to Jesus as being the Word! 4. Tells us that we need to have our sins forgiven through the name of Jesus Christ! 5. He is known as the Son of God so, we need to ask Him to come into our hearts and give us a new beginning; to live life in the way He wants to us to live it; by looking to Him to help us in every aspect of life and He definitely will do this if you become one of his children! See footnotes below:

1. (Romans 3:23-24) 2. (John 17:3) 3. (John 1: 1-4) 4. (Acts: 4:12) 5. (Romans 8:1)

Christian Outdoor Recreation: Reporting on: Yes, that’s what Memories are made of:

My son and his daughter live in the Seattle area and made plans to go camping at a lake some 9 miles off of an old trail head. The weather was perfect till they entered the old road. Then the sky opened up with rain making the road difficult to drive on because of so much water running down the road. Once they got to the end of the road it was raining like crazy, but they were determined not to let anything stop them from getting to the lake. There was still a lot of daylight left so they put on their back packs and started out knowing there was not going to be any relief from the rain! The road trail seemed to get gradually worse as there were several large water collection holes in the road with no way to get around them, so they waded through the water with it going over the top of their boots several times. It was sometime after dark before arriving at the lake with their attitudes showing some as the rain was still pouring down and they were soaked within the jackets they were wearing. My granddaughter put up the tent while my son went looking for fire wood to dry off some to make some coffee, but he never found any. He had a little kindling and a good fire starter but it would not burn long enough to get the wet wood dried out enough to keep it burning. Meanwhile my granddaughter was filling up the propane heater and lantern and without realizing it had spilled some on her soaked jeans. At this time her dad came in the tent while she striking a match to get each of them lit. In just a second of time the fumes from her pants sent up a small explosion to the to the netting in the top of the tent covering the air vent, which immediately melted; of course they did not realize that till later after they had the fire patted out on her jeans. They felt very blessed as they could have lost the whole tent! By the following morning the rain had quit and the weather was quite pleasant the rest of the morning they were there. As they left for the car, they felt they had a fairly nice time considering the circumstances that took place the day before; which of course is what memories are made of!

How old are you at this time:

Christian Outdoor Recreation: Reporting on: How old are you at this time?

If I was to ask you how old you are, what would you say? Would you give me your true birth date or would you tell me how old you are feeling at the time? Maybe you would even think about giving me a younger age because of the friends you are around, knowing that they are much younger than you; with you just trying to fit in so you will be accepted. Then there is the opposite of that, where a person may say they are older to fit in with the older crowd to get some of the perks younger people can’t get! This last one is very hard to believe as you could actually pity the person this happened too. An aunt, really esteemed a couple and bought a bouquet of flowers and a card reminding them of the amount of years they were married but it reminded the Husband of how old he was and he blew up! Why? Because once he got to the age of 39 that’s where he wanted to stay as they entertained with most of the upper crust of the city. He wanted people to view them younger than they really were and did not want anyone to say he was older! After several years something caused him to believe that he was 39
So even with a Birthday cake there was never any mention of age!
In the last few years of his life he changed how old he was to 29. This is a true story! (Told by his Wife )

Christian Outdoor Recreation: Reporting on: # 1 The Home of the Spruce Goose

While my Wife and I were helping my daughter move into their new home in Amity Oregon, we all decided to take a day off before the Wife and I left for our home in Eastern Oregon. They ask if we would like to go to the coast as it was only 26 miles away, but we found that was not feasible because of the weather. So my daughter asks if we would like to go to the (Evergreen Aviation, Plane and Space Museum) as it is known as among the largest in the USA. It is located just a few miles out of McMinnville Oregon on Hy-18. We decided we would like to go as one of the buildings was supposed to house the historical Spruce Goose which we had heard so many bits and pieces about back in the past. There was one bad thing I regretted upon arriving there though, I forgot to take my camera and was kicking myself all over for that as my daughter did not have one either. There were all kinds of different designs and progression stages there, from the start of aviation to modern times. Included in them was the Wright Brother’s plane along with some others you would not even think about trying to fly! Along with those were several Helicopters of different sizes right down to a petite model. There were also a number of Jets, Stealth, Missiles, Drones, Rocket’s, Space Capsules, Land Rovers, Tanks, Weaponry and the Spruce Goose. There were also many explanatory exhibits and movies of most everything we saw!

Christian Outdoor Recreation: Reporting on: # 2 I will never move again!

About 2 hours before dark on Friday we started hauling boxes and other things they wanted to sell out to the garage and moved a huge flat bed trailer in front of it for putting things on, Saturday morning. We were all inside the house by 10 and my son in law said that he wished that He could take out His empty 12 gage shotgun and hold people at bay till 7 0’clock until everything is in its place and priced. We all chuckled over that. Here is what took place! 3 people were up at the break of dawn wanting to get everything set up before people arrived. Of course that did not happen; by the time a 1/4 of the items were set out people were showing up by droves. With prices at give away, and many items free, we were overrun with people. What we couldn’t sell in a couple of hours we cut the price in half and gave away even more. Then after another couple of hours they called a charity to come and pick up the rest of their treasures, which at this point is worthless! Of course a month and half later after getting their house in order, they will be wishing they had not sold this or that and must now go out and buy another one! I won’t go into the amount of time it took to clean the house and the property with 6 of us working at it but to say, we got everything cleaned within the week we were there, but after we left they were still moving trucks full of items out of the large shed, to their home in Amity Oregon. If I ever have this amount of stuff to move; just shoot Me!
