Christian Outdoor Recreation:    Reporting on:  # 1 Once in a Life Time

This won first prize for the best story at the Big Buck and Burger Bash placed on the 2/3/2011.  This article is out of sync for it was just finished but it was well worth waiting for! The first person to tell a story was a 12 yr old named Trinton.  He came up front and got on top of a big stump that was sitting in front of the large tent.  As soon as he started talking he started rocking back a forth for he was prepared for what he was going to say because it happened to him!  He and a very few others had been chosen out of hundreds of people that applied for that once in a life time tag and received it, and his  enthusiasm showed it.  One day a father mentioned to his son that everyone in the family ought to put in for a Big Horn Sheep tag, they did and his oldest boy Trenton got the tag.  This is his story!

On a June afternoon my step-dad Eric called me over to the computer screen as this was the day the tag results were posted for hunters in Oregon.  I was coming up behind Eric to read the computer screen and said, “you need to find out if you drew any hunting tags this year.” I read out loud “buck deer, antelope – unsuccessful.”  ”Bummer, hu Eric?”  “No,” Trinton said as he read further, starting to get excited “ Bighorn sheep – successful.”  To be sure we had both read it right.

Eric said, “Read it again Trinton.”

“Bighorn sheep tag – successful.”

“Holy mackerel Trinton, do you know what you have just drawn?”

I called my Dad, Ryan, and told him the good news.  Dad was so excited he started screaming in the

phone “You got a bighorn sheep tag?”

 “Yep”

“Holy mackerel, kid, I can’t believe it.”

Now after the excitement dies down I learned that the preparation was to begin now.  To go on a Big Horn Sheep hunt I need to to practice my shooting skills, (which I enjoyed).  Next I had to get in shape! (now this was the hard part).  The last thing was scouting for California Bighorn Sheep in my hunt unit.  So that’s what I did in the summer of 2010.  I practiced shooting my Dad’s 308 rifle with a fold down rest and ran 3 miles, three times a week along with scouting 5 days for the Big Horn Sheep in our hunt unit.

Christian Outdoor Recreation: Reporting on: #2 Elk Hunting in the Silvies Unit

The father then went back to the pickup leaving yellow ribbon every 50ft or so he could find his way back to the Elk. Upon returning to the Elk with the 4 wheeler, he found the winch was jammed and called his son and ask him to come back and help place the spike bull on the 4 wheeler. Once they got the bull on the 4 wheeler, the father told his son to continue hunting as he would take care of the Elk. The son during this time had covered a lot of ground and was close to 7 miles from the pickup when he shot a 5 point bull. Once he had it gutted, he called his dad and was ready to start walking back to the pickup to get a 4 wheeler but before he hung up, the father told his son to place a yellow plastic strip every 100ft where it could be easily seen; instead he placed the tape about every 125yrds. When they went back for the 5 point bull Elk it was still light enough to see but they could not bring the head out with the body so they had to go back in the dark and had a hard time finding it because of the yellow tape strips being spaced out so far apart. Once they had the head strapped to the 4 wheeler and were about half way to the pickup they realized they were lost and had to phone the grandfather back in town which was about 40 miles from where they were. During this time the father decided to start a fire for them to keep warm but could not find the matches that were put in his pants pocket, so they huddled around the 4 wheeler until they could see a light shinning some distance away and started off toward the light till they could hear the horn on the pickup. By the time they got to the pickup it was 2:30am and 2hrs after that before they arrived home. A few days later the father confided in me that when he went to bed he found the missing matches in his pocket.

Berger Bash Story #1 Elk Hunting in the Silvies Unit

Christian Outdoor Recreation:                              Reporting on:    # I Elk Hunting in the Silvies Unit

Story # I told at the Burger Bash was about Elk hunting in the Silvies Unit of Oregon and at that time there was no snow.   About a week before the first rifle season for Elk, a father and his son being I8yrs old scouted out an area they wanted to hunt.  They found a lot of fresh sign in the area as the ground was fairly moist and decided there was no need of looking elsewhere!  Monday morning around 4am they took off for their hunting area.   Once there, they found all kinds of new tracks.  They walked together till they came to where the mountain split in two directions but still paralleled one another.  They decided at that point to split up.  Sometime later the father sees several Elk in a draw but it was some distance from him so he calls his son and told him to go down the hill he was on and come up the hill his dad was on.  The Son did what his father asks but they never did meet up.  Meanwhile the father kept watching till the Elk moved out of the draw.  The father then moved up after them and saw a number of them together but never could get a shot at the bulls; with one having massive horns but they were all standing in the midst of a number of cows.   The father then spotted another group about 200yrds off and saw a lone spike bull and pulled up and shot it.  The father then called his son as he was concerned and found out he was not far away so his son came over and helped gut it out.  Then the father told his son to keep hunting as he would go get the 4 wheeler and drag it back to the pickup.

Award winning Coyote calling and Hunting Demonstration

Christian Outdoor Recreation: Reporting on: Award winning Coyote Calling and Hunting demonstration:

This year we had a father and son who had several awards for Coyote calling come to the church to demonstrate their skill and knowledge. The Father had taken his Son Coyote hunting some years back just for something to do but the son kept on hunting them though and kept on urging his father to go out with him and after a time he got his father seriously involved in it as well. When the father shared, He told how he had shot a lot of big game animals but none were as evasive and cunning as the Coyote. He said that a glare off of a scope could scare one 500yrds away and that a person’s face could glare up to 300yrds. So to keep from scaring a Coyote, a person has got to have cameo on your gun, scope, clothes as well as a covering over your face if you are ever going to be serious about hunting them. The Father and the Son both demonstrated the different calls and told about all the equipment that they had as well as the number of different guns they used and he had several. He also talked about finding a low spot in the side of the hill with plenty of cover in front of it, preferably towards the top of the hill. He then went on to say, try not to move as that can be noticed a great distance from you. Now in doing all these things, you will develop a great deal of patience and perseverance. It was then that the father told about having a covering over their face in 100 plus degrees. They also talked about using a decoy, which were a mechanical device waving something like a feather back and forth and a second one that was jerking at times. Then they told how they would set the decoy about 100yrds away towards the bottom of the hill: as they were hid up towards the top of the hill in a low spot; in that way the decoys had most of their attention placed on them and were far more apt to come in!

Planning for the Big Buck and Burger Bash

Christian Outdoor Recreation: Reporting on: PLANNING FOR THE BIG BUCK AND BERGER BASH

For the last 10 yrs now in the month of January, our Men’s group has hosted an outreach into our community to draw men who are involved in hunting, trapping as well as those who would just like to have a break from their regular routine of sitting in the house all winter; to join us as a group in our church annex for a big Buck and Burger bash. We live in a fairly small town in Oregon of about 3000 people and live 132miles from any large town! So normally, in this town we don’t have a whole lot going on around here! It takes several planning sessions to put some like this in place for the number of people that show up and of course, ultimately, it’s just a educated guess as to the amount of supply’s we buy, to bring this big buck and burger bash in too being. Sometimes people will bring fairly Exotic meats such as smoked Ell, Cougar, Bobcat, Coyote or different types of fish appetizers! Others things that are put in too play are making up tickets, getting prizes and gifts with some being donated as door prizes and others for the best stories told. Another thing is contacting a speaker that leans on the truth of the Word of God, to present a message and has a deep interest in hunting. Along with that we try to find people who are really accomplished in using calls and sometimes we use those found right in our own body but other times we will bring in people who has won several awards and has a great knowledge of what they hunt and what it takes to entice them in to get a shot at them. We have had a number of people using several different types of the same call to show the differences in sound as well as shown how each one are used. They also show their equipment; like rifles, cameo clothes and other paraphernalia. About the only two calls we have not heard, if there is such a thing; is a Bear or a Wild Pig call! Ha.

#3 Elk Hunting in the N. Malheur River Unit:

Christian Outdoor Recreation Reporting on: #3 Elk Hunting in the N. Malheur River Unit:

When we finally got the Elk in the back of our pickup, they said they were going to go further back in on the same road and hunt. Since my son still had a tag and they had 2 tags to be filled we said we would join them. They took the lead while my son and I looked for something to eat, so we were about 3 mins behind them. We were within a ¼ of a mile of them when we heard shots ring out and I pushed the pedal a little more to get there. What we saw was a large square made out of logs possibly 10’x10’ by around 6 ½’ ft. high. What purpose it was designed for I do not know; maybe it was to protect some plant or tree! Anyhow, a large cow Elk had jumped the wall of the structure leaving it’s calf on the outside. The Mother of my son’s friend shot the large cow Elk right inside the enclosure and her son shot a good size calf in the front leg. It then took off side hilling as it went up and immediately the son took right off after it with me being about 2 mins. behind him. I stayed on his tracks for about 10mins. and decided I would try to cut off some time so I took for the top of the hill. Once getting there I spotted my son’s friend still on the track. We then went several yards and he saw the calf and took another shot at it,too no avail. 2mins. later He saw the calf again and made that shot count. We then gutted it out and started the long trek back with us at times going straight downhill; thus we ended up with the calf at the top and us getting run over a couple or three times. Once we got back to the pickup we found they had cut the cow up in pieces and put a rope on each piece to pull it over the top of the enclosure and were in the process of packing when we arrived with the calf. All in all we had a great day! As my son and I drove back we saw tracks everywhere and decided to take one more walk as he still had a tag but we never did fill it! But, we praised GOD for the one we had!

Christian Outdoor Recreation: Reporting on: #2 Elk Hunting in the N. Malheur River Unit:

We then turned right on to a road we were not familiar with and found fresh tracks. My son and I split up with each us walking about 60ft off to the side of the tracks we were following. About 20mins later my son shoved a cow in back of a tree about 50ft in front of me to my right. I could barely make it out so I froze and waited to see what would take place. About 4mins later a large cow Elk came right out in front of me going straight away up a small hill. I then pulled up and shot it in the back of the head! My son then came over and we praised the lord for it! Then he held the legs while I gutted it and then went to move the pickup a lot closer than it was. He was gone for about 30mins and I was getting concerned as to what was keeping him. About that time my son and a friend of his came walking up to help pull the Elk down to the pickup. I was pleased as we could trade off at times pulling her. By the time the pickup was in view I saw the Friends mother and sister get out of their pick up. So I got to meet them and we set about taking the legs off as it was too large to lift it!

#1 Elk Hunting in the N. Malheur River Unit:

Christian Outdoor Recreation: Reporting on: #1 Elk Hunting in the N. Malheur River Unit:

One year my son and I was Elk hunting in Oregon in the north Malheur River Unit. This was one of those days you dream about where the weather is just the right temperature with no sun and a snow level of 15” where we were going to hunt. It was just light enough to see as we left the highway in Silvies Valley turning right on to the Van-Drewsey road. Upon entering the forest boundary we saw the remains of an elk that was shot the night before on the beginning edge of a side road. We then went about 2 1/2 miles and turned north toward Seneca on 1601. I knew exactly where we wanted to hunt as we had hunted it several times in the past. We went several miles before turning off to the right which took us into higher country. As we started up a fairly steep grade we could see a very old fence line up hill from us that mostly laid flat on the ground. It was at that time we had to stop and put chains on for even in 4 wheel drive the wheels were spinning as the pickup we were in was fairly light! Once the chains were installed, we started moving up the hill again just in time to see a herd of 25 Elk running just this side of the fence towards the road we were on. Once there, they were running among the trees but I got off one shot and missed and continued to track several Elk for some time. After that we went about another mile up the road looking for fresh Elk tracks as it had snowed that morning.

#5 Whitetail Hunting in the Wallowa’s

Christian Outdoor Recreation: Reporting on: #5 Whitetail Hunting in the Wallowa’s:

As we left the farm with my Granddaughter’s Deer we got on a graveled road leading back to the highway. we had just went about 200 yrds when I saw a large Whitetail coming out of the brush into a clearing about 80 yrds back in. I told Guy my son in law and He thought for a few seconds and said I think we are still on the Ranchers property. I then ask, would it be ok to shoot it then and He said sure. After moving into the brush I put shells in my rifle and aimed at the head and it fell but it was still moving its head at times. My Granddaughter was close to me so I told her to go ask Guy to bring his Revolver and shoot it in the head. I was about 50ft from it and figured I had better keep an eye on it. About 5 mins later Guy comes walking over and I turned my face to him. When He was just a few feet from me He said your deer is getting away and immediately said we may be on someone else’s property for I found very old signs with vines over them. Well by that time, I turned to see the Deer another 40 yrds on the other side of a fence just standing there looking at me, like It was daring me to shoot it. I honestly did not know whether to shoot it again or not. All I could think of was I did not want to wrestle within my mind, if I was too shoot it, whether it was legal or not. What did we do? We kept our eyes on it for 3 or 4 mins without talking and watched it finally turn around real fast with its white tail flag straight up and pounced out of sight. With that we knew the Whitetail was perfectly ok and my mind was set at rest as I did not have to evaluate the situation any more. I just looked at it as this was the Lord’s doing as He knew what was best for me!

#4 Whitetail Hunting in the Wallowa’s

Christian Outdoor Recreation: Reporting on: #4 Whitetail Hunting in the Wallowa’s:

Can I honestly say I wanted to go out to the Farm one more time, yes I did and so did my Granddaughter. She wanted to shoot her first Deer and I wanted to be there when she did! You never know what could happen if you choose to look at things from the wrong perspective for those same circumstances will never come around again. Once again we drove to the Farm and parked below the old Iron Gate. My Granddaughters Boy friend was absent as He had to work. So Guy, my son in law said He would walk the area between the fence and the River bordering the field. This time my Granddaughter and I decided to stay up close to the gate till Guy moved into the brush. We were talking and laughing and moving our eyes to the bottom fence line and should have kept them there but instead we were looking up the hill and all of a sudden I saw my Granddaughter pull up and shoot as a large Doe ran broadside about 100ft out from her in the field running for the crest of the hill. Now I did not raise my Rifle for this was her time. She shot 3 times and yelled Grandpa shoot well I did not even have my Rifle up and the Whitetail was fast approaching the crest of the hill but I did get off two quick shots and did not touch Her. About that time my Granddaughter starts shooting again at a large fawn so I looked back and told her to keep shooting and she got it! She had gotten her first Deer! Hopefully my Granddaughter and I have relearned a valuable lesson from that, to keep both our eyes and our mind on the work at hand as the experience we just had, could have had a much more positive outcome!
