What is Tolerable

Christian Outdoor Recreation: Reporting on: What is tolerable?

Have you ever heard a kid or teenager declare to you how someone’s house or bed room looked after being invited over to their place? We know as a kid we are told there are different degrees of clean and just being messy with things strung all over and the bed not made. Most of us have learned from our parents, as too what is tolerable and what is not in our home and whether we complied with their wishes is another matter! It’s amazing how as a child we think; we ought to have the right be able to keep up our bedroom just like the kid next door. Of course most of us learn in short order; it’s not for me to dictate how I’m going to do anything; leastwise not until we are a number of years older! Even as an adult though, we once in a while hear from others how someone’s home looked or smelled and sometimes can seem to be intolerable to live in. Yet sometimes it’s beyond their control and after a while it becomes the norm because they have gotten used to it. In the following situation, an elderly couple was of some age and the wife was taking care of her husband’s needs for 3 years. She met his every need during this time with things progressing downward to where she was not able to keep up the house as she had once did. We had got to know them in the past and had formed a relationship with them over time. During the last 3 years of her husband’s life we visited them several times as we lived quite some distance from them. There was nothing we could do to help the situation, outside of praying for them and with them through the things they were going through in the hope that by the grace of God, circumstances would change to where the health of their mate would be bettered immensely. The wife was pressured by her brothers to find someone to pick up the clutter of dishes, newspapers and clothes lying around. But the people she hired to do these things just looked at the mess and walked out. One person lived with her for a while and did her grocery shopping but could not cook and did very little as far as washing dishes, clothes and trying to pick up the clutter; and did more talking and reading than anything else and soon the wife felt she was better off without her and let her go. Each time we visited them we were inclined to help do things but she would not allow us to do anything! One thing she wanted however, whenever we left their home was a prayer lifted up for them to the throne of our God’s Grace through the name of his Son, Jesus Christ. After her husband died, we went to the funeral and thought she would really get with it and start cleaning the house. But it took some time for her to get over the grieving process and then, real reality set in as the bills started pouring in and we found out later that her husband did not confide with his wife about finances and left her with a huge problem! ( enough said about this, though!) The one thing I would like to leave you with is, confide in your mate about everything financial and show them where all important papers are kept and have all bills written down. Next, when any changes need to be made do it together so there is no surprises and do it as soon as possible, because it can sure save your mate a lot of misery later on if something happens to either of you physically and or one of you is taken home early!

Have you checked your your Equipment lately?

Christian Outdoor Recreation: Reporting on: Have you checked out your equipment lately?

How many times have you or someone you have known, have taken out their boat and motor and found it not operating properly either in getting it started from the boat ramp or getting it up on plane or the worst scenario; having it stall some miles down the lake and having to call someone to have it towed back to the boat dock? Sooner or later the odds are very great that something will happen and the only way to maybe prevent most of it from happening is preventive maintenance. If you are mechanical minded enough you may be able to check out most things yourself if they are fairly small or you are set up to handle the larger motors. With both though, you must have some knowledge of the working of an outboard and or an inboard motor. Just recently, a friend and his wife were out at Warm springs Reservoir with their flat bottom boat which had a 9 horse motor on it. They were several miles down the reservoir when their motor just up and quit. Now my friend was familiar with the working of the motor and started looking around and eventually found that part of the throttle linkage was missing and assumed that the linkage was in the bottom of the housing, with no way of retrieving it. They had seen no one on the lake they could possibly get help from so he started praying that the Lord would enable him to get the motor started so they could get the boat back to the ramp. He then decided to hold the part of the throttle that was still there in hopes that it would start and it did! He then ask his wife to move to the front of the boat to help hold the front down, as he knew the front would raise with him holding the throttle on the motor wide open. I talked to him and his wife later and he said the first thing they did upon getting the boat to the dock was praise the Lord. Both of them said that was the smoothest ride they ever experienced in that boat in spite of how high the waves were!

Christian Outdoor Recreation: Reporting on: Several good solution Tips:

Cure urinary tract infections with Alka-Seltzer. Just dissolve two tablets in a glass of water and drink it at the onset of the symptoms. Alka-Seltzer begins eliminating urinary tract infections almost instantly: even though the product was never been advertised for this use.
Alka-Seltzer can provide quicker pain relief and if you want immediate relief from bee sting or insect bite make a paste out of Alka-Seltzer and place it on them.
Cover skin blemishes with Honey and place a Band-Aid over it. Honey kills the bacteria and keeps the skin sterile thus speeding up the healing and it works very fast.
Using Listerine therapy: can provide double duty, first by soaking your toes in it to rid them of toe fungus and then after a shower, put some on a cotton swab and place it on your Athletes foot to eliminate it!
Baking Soda can remove stains on teeth making them appear whiter but can also be used to calm irritated skin and take the sting out of sunburn. It can also minimize Eczema, Poison Ivy, Prickly heat and helps neutralize the PH Balance of your skin by placing a cup of soda under the faucet in the tub.
To stop bleeding of the nose when all else fails: first blow all clots, next inhale nose spray such as Afrin or Mucinex; then pinch the soft part of the nose closed and maintain pressure for a full 10 minutes. and if it still does not stop; hold for another 10. If it is still running after that, seek help!
Use Witch Hazel to fight Acne.
Aloe Vera can be used for Burns and eliminating canker sores
Extra Virgin olive oil keeps cholesterol and belly fat in check!
Cleaning liquid that doubles as bug killer: if menacing bees, wasps, hornets, or yellow jackets get in your home and you can’t find the insecticide try a spray of formula 409. Insects will drop to the ground instantly.
Smart splinter remover: just pour a drop of Elmer’s Glue-All over the splinter, let dry, and peel the dried glue off the skin. The splinter sticks to the dried glue.
To prevent screws from loosing from your glasses, place clear finger nail polish on part of the threads before tightening.

Avalanche Awareness

Christian Outdoor Recreation: Reporting on: Avalanche Awareness:

If you were to ask a lot of people, not too many know how dangerous and lethal they can be. Only some states have mountains that are capable of having avalanches. The most common state to have horrible avalanches is in Colorado. Most deaths have occurred in the months of January, February, and March and are caused by an unusual amount of accumulation in certain areas and temperature variation. But surprisingly many deaths have come in May and June which shows that you should always be aware of what could happen traveling in certain areas. From 1950 through the year 2000 about 520 deaths have occurred in over 15 different states due to avalanche. These numbers jumped at me when I read them and really showed me the real dangers of open mountains with massive amounts of snow. There are so many things that can affect and cause an avalanche. In my mind I think of it more as depending on the Steepness of the slope and the weather conditions as too when the snow will move. You can never tell when one is forth coming but remember, try to be prepared when it happens. One way to help you survive just in case you happen to be a part of an avalanche, I have been told it is easier to loosen your clothes just in case you get stuck you can slip out and hopefully find help.

#2 The Home of the Spruce Goose

Christian Outdoor Recreation: Reporting on: # 2 the Home of the Spruce Goose

The one thing that impresses everyone though, more than anything else there, is the largest plane ever built out of wood with the name of Spruce Goose. It was built and finished during the years of World War II. It was so large they constructed the building over it! The wing span of the plane was longer than a foot ball field with each wing having 4 huge engines. The Spruce Goose has a height of 79ft and a tail section that is 3 stories in height. You could actually walk inside the wings standing up to the last few feet, and then you would have to be on hands and knees. The total weight of the Plane is an astonishing 200 tons. With a plane that large and that kind of weight I can easily understand why the media at that time said it would never fly. So just to prove it could fly, Howard Hughes took it out of its hanger bay on Nov. 2, 1947 for it’s maiden voyage, to determine stability on how it would handle at the speed needed for takeoff. He made 3 test runs and on the fourth one flew at 135 mph for about a mile. Hercules 4 was the given name, during its building. It was a forerunner of the massive transport aircraft of today. After several years, the Spruce Goose was on exhibit along with the Queen Mary in long Beach, California for some years. Then the Evergreen Museum in Oregon said they would like to have it. It was then disassembled and moved by Barge and Truck to their Museum’s site. After 138 days of moving the pieces 1,055 miles the parts arrived on Feb. 27, 1993. It was then reassembled and a building was constructed around it. If you want to be awed by the sheer size of it; go to the Museum. Before you go though, I would call them, for it can be spendy for some. Someone there told us they do have plans of expanding even more by putting in a hotel and another large Exhibit area to place everything that is now outside, in it. Another new addition they are adding this year is a large water slide.

Be prepared for fishing fun:

Christian Outdoor Recreation: Reporting on: Be Prepared for fishing fun:

Fishing is one of America’s favorite past times. Fishing can be a great activity and can also be exciting and tranquil all at the same time. So, before you go out make sure you’re packed all the things you will need to make your outing as joyful as possible. First make sure you have a fishing license! If you are fishing with children check to make sure your state does not require them to have a license (some states do). You don’t want to be stuck being ticketed with a large fine. Pack yourself a couple of sandwiches, snacks and some drinks in a cooler. You will also need some small trash bags, sunscreen, bug repellent and hand wipes/napkins. Oh, don’t forget your hat and sunglasses. If you are fishing in the spring you don’t want to go early in the morning because the water is cold and the sun is low. You want to wait until the water warms up a bit. Don’t let that detour you because winter is over and the fish are hungry and spawning. Keep in mind that fish have excellent vision and can hear and detect vibrations. Fish can also smell and taste food. To catch a fish one needs to know where the fish lives and what they like to eat. You can go to your local bait shop to find where your local hotspots are and for some inside information on where the fish will bite. Happy Fishing!!

Being Shoved

Christian Outdoor Recreation: Reporting on: Being shoved

Envision this, you are in a large high school talking to someone and what you have in your arms goes flying on the floor because someone has accidently hit you from the sea of people passing by. You don’t want someone to hit you kneeling down so you use your feet to shove your things out of the line of oncoming traffic to the wall; where you will be able pick up your things without being mowed over. It’s the same way in a large theater, concert hall or large sporting event; there can be so many people moving that a person may be shoved along with no way to move out of the line of traffic. It’s been said that most people that die in a moving crowd comes from asphyxiation not from being trampled! The force of five people moving forward is enough to collapse the lung of an adult on the receiving end that can’t move. At the first signs of trouble, gradually begin moving sideways or backward, out of the flow. Knowing the danger signs could save your life. Whether it is an emergency or not if you are being touched on all four sides. Begin moving sideways to the perimeter of the crowd to avoid being trapped; with People at the back pushing forward into people in front of them who have no room to move. Try to maneuver sideways and backward in a zigzag pattern to safety.

#2 Why do I really need to Exercise?

Christian Outdoor Recreation:   Reporting on:  #2 Why do I really need to Exercise?

That’s when I decided I needed to develop a regular routine of exercising every part of me including my neck for a couple of rotations and my waist 3 to 4 times each way. I started out doing stretching exercises of all kinds. Then along the way I started walking in place when doing my arm, wrist, and finger stretches.  But for most all stretches I do, I repeat them 10 + times. I also do knee bends as well as bending over and touching each foot and come back up; then being on my knees I lift a straight leg up toward my back then move it outside for a count of five and do each leg 5 times. Then I lie on my back with a small pillow under my head and bend my legs part way up at the knees with my feet on the floor and move my body to sit up position. the next one is just laying flat and lifting one leg upward  toward your head like you are taking a stride then place it back down flat and move your leg out to the side and hold it for a count of 5 then move it back in and do other leg. The last one is just raise both knees toward the chest and straighten out your legs and lower them to the floor, I do it 15 times. I also do a lot of pushups from my knees and use both a stationary Bike and a rebounder for 9mins each, but I alternate back and forth in the exercises I do, just to break up the monotony!   (Warning) if you don’t know where you are in strength or health! (Do not push yourself in doing any of these!)

Christian Outdoor Recreation:                              Reporting on:    # I Why do I really need to Exercise?

Well we are in the third month of the year now and the snow has melted down to about 6”in depth.  I would imagine like me, you want spring to hurry up and get here!  The reason I feel this way is we have had snow on the ground since the beginning of November.  After a time, it wears on you mentally as you would like to go outside and do something without freezing and without having a fear of slipping on the ice!  This brings up the need of our topic, exercising.  Some do not need it as they are fairly active in their jobs and hobbies they are involved in.  During the spring and summer I do a lot of things outside to keep myself physically active so I rarely exercise.  But when I was working at the mill I was doing a lot of standing and when something went wrong I could be in any position imagined; to fix it and could be in that position for a 10mins to 2 hours. That is why I exercised 20mins every morning before going to work just to stay as agile as I needed to be!  On the weekend I normally always spend 35 to 40mins every morning doing exercises.  As a person gets older they definitely need exercise to keep them flexible, without it they will slow down and be far more apt to hurt or get hurt!  Once I got to around 40 I realized that I was not nearly as flexible as I needed to be as I was down on my knees sometimes.

Pond skating safety tips

Christian Outdoor Recreation: Reporting on: Pond skating safety tips:

With winter here and the snow starting to fall many of us cannot wait to get out into the cold and enjoy the weather. There are number of us who would rather be out in the ice cold rather than sitting in front of a fire cuddling up with a hot cup of cocoa. I for one cannot wait to dig out the old ice skates. Being out in the cold is an exciting and unique experience, but we all need to be careful because it can result in a serious accidents or even death if proper safety precautions are not used. You may think that temperature is the only factor to consider when determining if the ice is safe enough to skate on. The sunshine, wind and protruding objects can and will dramatically affect the ice stability on an hourly basis. The ice should be inspected every time before beginning you’re skating. This will ensure that you and your family and friends are safe. Always inspect the area in which you plan on skating up to about every 10 feet. When you walk around the ice, test is by chipping at it to determine the structure and the thickness. If the ice breaks off in chunks this is a good indication of high density and strength. If the ice flakes or you see thin layers, this however is an indication that the ice is unsafe because it is weak and deteriorating, I would say that it would be unsafe to start skating or continue. Pond ice skating should never be done on clear ice, old ice or ice that appears to be gray or black ice, these make for ice that is very porous and weak. Always stay Safe while you enjoy your winter adventures.
