Christian Outdoor Recreation: Reporting on: Camping Safety For Beginners:

If you are a beginner camper or if you have not been camping for a few years, you may want to stay close to home and iron out any problem you may have. One way of doing that is too consider camping out in your very own backyard to find out if you are prepared as you really have need of being; as it seems like we always forget something the first or second time out. This may seem childish but it’s far better to solve any problem in your camping routine now and it’s a cheap way to find out if camping is right for you. Before you head out on your adventure, remember camping should be about fun and safety. I cannot stress how important it is to plan and plan some more. Make yourself familiar with the area you will be camping at. Check the short and long-term weather forecasts. Be sure to make a detailed list of things to bring with you. Be Prepared, here are a few items to get you started. Be ready for accidents and bring a fully stocked first aid kit with the know how to use it. A sleeping bag and ground cover or sleeping pad is needful to keep you cozy as well as a tent and basic camping tools. Unless you have had experience in setting and maintaining an open fire, consider using a camp stove or portable grill. Plan your trip so that you arrive early with plenty of daylight to choose your location and set up your camp. Be sure to inspect you campsite for trees with dead or diseased limbs. There is nothing worse than a tree limb crashing through your tent at two in the morning. Also, keep an eye out for insect nests, both on the ground, and in trees or brush. You may also want to spot and avoid poisonous plants and Stay away from any questionable areas.

Christian Outdoor Recreation Reporting on: Shots of the past # 3

After my Grandfather’s oldest son left for Oklahoma, to bring the entire family and all their belongings back to Wilder Idaho. My Grandfather and his son used any spare time they had to prepare for their family’s arrival and the on coming winter. They made a large cellar for the fruit, nuts, and vegetables and the smoked and dried meat they would probably bring with them. A neighbor came by and told them, they could get eggs and milk at his place if they wanted too; and if they needed kerosene or other things, there was a general store within a ¼ of a mile of them. The 10’x 12’ tent they were going to stay in through the winter months had a kerosene stove that was used not only for warmth but for cooking on as well. The floor of the tent was dug deep enough to put wood boxes in to hold their clothes, cooking utensils and all the other things they needed. By the time their family arrived in Oct. they were prepared to winter in the tent. In the spring of 1937 the men found some construction work but not much, so the whole family worked in the fields and orchards at times. Then in Oct of 1937 they moved their family to Nyssa Oregon to work on the construction of the sugar beet factory.

Christian Outdoor Recreation:            Reporting on:   Setup for the Big Buck and Burger Bash

As far as outreach into our community, we each just ask friends and neighbors and the number has steadily increased every year.  The first thing we do the day before is set up tables and chairs as well as the tent which is 12x14ft. It is all one piece and has lengths of pipe and other fitting which makes the tent setup very nice. Once done with that, all the things you would normally take with you camping are placed in the tent or around it; like a cot, a bed or a hammock having metal legs along with sleeping bags and an old rifle and knife. What’s nice also is to have a fold up table which holds the legs and extra leafs along with the silver ware and once setup; will hold the stove as well as the pots and pans.  Camping chairs as well as a few stumps are set outside along with a water container, a shovel which is just outside the tent opening with a roll of toilet paper on the handle. A backpack and lantern is also set inside along with possibly a Guitar for singing songs.  There was one thing missing  this year though, the fire place.
